The Danish Wohld

What you can expect:

Some places seem like something out of a fairytale book, but it's often worth taking a look behind the scenes and getting to know the history better...

This is exactly what awaits you in Gettorf: centrally located on the Dänischer Wohld peninsula, the history of this town dates back to the 13th century. The first settlers were soon followed by Holstein noblemen who built magnificent estates. The impressive gothic St. Jürgen's Church with its late gothic altar and renaissance pulpit still tells of the importance of this place today. For a lively historical experience, you should definitely visit the local history museum: Crafts and agriculture, everyday life and school are lovingly brought to life here. And for younger visitors, Miss Strüfing even offers a school lesson as it was 100 years ago, complete with cane and donkey cap...

For an even deeper insight into the past, you can visit the Geotanium, which is dedicated to the fascinating world of rocks. Whether geological lectures, guided tours or beach hikes - here, children and adults alike can immerse themselves in exciting worlds full of crystals, fossilized shells and interesting stinky limestone.

Destination: Gettorf

Distance: approx. 27 km

Suitable for bad weather: It's better if the rain doesn't last longer than a shower - even if the zoo with its tropical halls and animal houses offers shelter not only for the four-legged friends living there...

Children: Whether in the zoo, on the playground or in the "Crazy House" - the youngest ones won't be drawn away here in a hurry

Dog: There are more attractive excursion destinations for your four-legged friend - and dogs are not allowed in the zoo anyway

Nature/culture/sport: There's something here for young and old - and you're all curious, aren't you?

Duration: "Try coziness", as Baloo the bear once sang in "The Jungle Book" - an ideal motto for your Gettorf tour

Getting around: It's best to leave your car at Karl-Kolbe-Platz, as you can easily reach everything on foot from here

Local's tip: Be sure to take a detour to the Rathmannsdorf lock on the Old Eider Canal - in 1872 more than 5000 ships passed here every year, today nature has reclaimed this idyllic spot!

Tour combination: Take the time for a walk along the Old Eider Canal to the Kiel Canal - a little wilderness dream!
