On the trail of the Vikings

What you can expect:

A visit to Haithabu used to be a must, especially for schoolchildren in Schleswig-Holstein. But times are changing! When you're with us, you should definitely make a detour to the Haithabu Viking Open-Air Museum and immerse yourself in the fascinating world of the Vikings who once inhabited this ancient trading town.

Thanks to the exceptional preservation in the local bogs, we can not only admire the well-preserved remains, but also better understand the life of the Vikings at this important trading and transportation hub in Northern Europe. Over 12,000 graves have been discovered here during excavations and around 120 houses, in which ten to twelve people lived, stood on an area of 26 hectares. The seven reconstructed buildings, from the inn to the comb maker's house, offer us an insight into their everyday lives.

You can admire the palisades and wall scaffolding that were approved by the Viking women at the time, while the men mainly devoted themselves to their work as farmers and craftsmen. Contrary to what is sometimes portrayed in films, the Norsemen were not always out at sea. But that in no way diminishes their fascination, which you can experience up close here in Haithabu!
